The varial kickflip is a pretty little move, a lot easier than you might think. You want to have mastered the pop shove-it and the kickflip before you try this, but it's not essential. Now, feet positioning. This is only the way I do it, it might not work for you. Have your front foot in the middle of the board on the outside edge, pointing almost straight forward. Your back foot wants to go almost in the ollie position but a bit closer to the far side of the tail. To make it up or down anything you will need to bend your knees a lot.
I reccomend learning the varial kickflip moving, it's easy trust me. Now bend your knees a lot like I said, pop your back foot down hard on the tail and rise up at the same time. Jump into the air and push, or "shove", the board round to the right (left for goofy). When it's turned about halfway it should have started to flip, but if not you probably have to add a bit of a kick. Once the board has flipped once and turned 180 degrees bring your legs down and catch the board in the air. Bend your knees on landing and ride away smoothly.
