The ollie is the big one. Without it, you're really going nowhere. And being able to ollie standing still on carpet while holding onto two chairs with your mate there to catch you if you fall over is not going to help. I'm afraid there's only so much you can be taught about the subject from tricktips. You really need to learn it yourself, or you're really never going to learn to skate at all.
But just in case you really don't have a clue, I'll explain the basic mechanics of it step by step.
Put the ball of your back foot on the edge of the tail.
Put your front foot right in the middle of the board, not many people do though, and you can get away with it being nearer to the trucks.
Crouch down real low, until your nails nearly scrape the ground.
Slam hard on the tail and slide your front foot up to just beyond the front bolts. At the same time:
Jump of your back foot and tuck your knees up.
Straighten your legs out and put your feet over the bolts, this will prevent breakage if you are going a considerable distance.
Absorb the landing by bending your legs and ride away.
